Boxiecat Cat Litter Review

Boxiecat is a relatively new cat litter company that specializes in subscription-based services. Specifically, you will set up your account and a new bag of Boxiecat cat litter will arrive at your door at a time interval of your liking.
While that is what made them popular, they have since expanded to selling in various online marketplaces such as Amazon. And that route is how we got ahold of some to try.
Boxiecat Cat Litter Choices
There are currently four types of Boxiecat Cat Litter to choose from. Boxiecat Scent-free, Boxiecat Gently Scented, and Boxiecat Extra Strength will be discussed in this review. There is a new fourth cat litter that is called BoxiePro that we plan on reviewing soon.
All three of the cat litters in this review have their unique benefits. For cats and owners with sensitive allergies or breathing issues, there is a non-scented version. And for owners of multiple cats or that want the best in odor retention, the Extra Strength litter would fit your needs.
Now we will break down the various metrics that we use to determine if Boxiecat Cat Litter is worth you checking out!

Who This Cat Litter is Intended For
Boxiecat Cat litter is intended for those households who like simple, effective cat litters that don’t try to break the mold. These owners are people who stick with traditional clay clumping litters due to their proven clumping ability, ability to fight off cat waste, and their reasonable costs. It is also good for people who are sick and tired of having to go to the store and lug home heavy cat litter containers. Instead, they can take advantage of weekly or monthly deliveries of their needed cat litter right to their door.
Clumping Ability – 
Clay cat litters have always led the way in the clumping department that there is no exception here. The specific clay that Boxiecat has sourced forms extremely hard clumps that stay hard for several days without issue.
Dry waste clumps do a good job of being encompassed in litter granules. Just enough granules stick to the waste to lock in the smell and keep it in one piece. And thankfully, not too many granules stick to form huge clumps that are both hard to remove and wasteful.
Also, rather than the clumps forming and sinking to the bottom, they do a good jump of staying near the surface. This makes it easy for your cat to identify to avoid and you for you to identify to remove.
Any urine that hits the clay is quickly soaked up. Boxiecat offers up some of the most impressive wet cat waste clumping that we have ever seen. Cat urine can be particularly notorious for being an issue to remove. Many clay cat litters will simply soak up the litter and allow it to run to the bottom of the litter box. This results in urine build up which, over time, creates a very strong and unpleasant ammonia smell.
Boxiecat litter granules, when exposed to liquid, form small plates within minutes that are extremely hard to the touch. You will have no problem scooping them up and shouldn’t have a concern about them falling apart while doing so.
The clumping ability across all three products seems to be pretty similar. Since Boxiecat’s main ingredient is clay in all three products, this isn’t a huge surprise to us. While the Boxiecat Gently Scented and Boxiecat Extra Strength does have additional ingredients, they don’t go overboard to dilute the clumping power of the clay.
Scent –
No matter what you or your cat’s preference is for cat litter smells, there is a Boxiecat cat litter that should work for you.
For owners of cats who are sensitive to perfumes and aromatics, there is an odor-free cat litter. This product is quite literally nothing more than simple clay. It will have the subtle industrial smell that most clays do, but if your cat doesn’t have an issue with this smell in other brands, then they should be fine here as well.
For people who enjoy the pleasant smell and added odor-masking ability of scented litters, there is also Boxie Cat Gently Scented. The perfume smell is not overpowering but is there in just enough potency to make a difference. What we like about it is that it doesn’t kick up until exposed to moisture. In other words, simply pouring out the litter or being near it won’t expose you or your cat to overwhelming fumes. Instead, there will be a small but pleasant waft of perfume that is activated when your cat does its business.
Furthermore, this scent (that is called Boxiecat Calm) was developed by veterinarians and is designed with natural ingredients that are proven to calm and soothe your cat. Cool stuff!
As for the litter’s ability to fight cat litter odors, we are extremely impressed. All three models do a great job of really locking in cat waste smells for days at a time. This can be mostly attributed to the tight clumps that are formed. It is like putting a zip-lock bag around the feces and urine!
But for those who need an extra boost in the odor-fighting sector, look into the Boxiecat Extra Strength. This product takes the great odor-locking ability from the clay and throws in some probiotics. These probiotics help to stop the growth of bacteria. Bacteria growth is one of the major causes of additional odors forming in your cat’s litter box. So rather than try to mask their odor, this cat litter is designed to stop it before it can even happen.
If you have a multi-cat litter box or have cats that are on higher-protein diets, we recommend sticking with the Extra Strength. Also, if you are someone who travels a lot or is notorious for not getting to your litter box to clean it promptly, then Boxiecat Extra Strength is the way to go.
Messiness – 
One of the major complaints with clay cat litters (and a big reason why non-clay litter such as silica gel crystals have become popular) is because of how messy they are. Clay litters are notorious for having a lot of dust, being messy during the cleanup, and also being prone to tracking.
Boxiecat has found a litter formula that avoids these issues. In regards to dust levels, they are below average compared to nearly every other clay litter that we have tested. This makes pouring, cleaning, and removing the litter easy to do and you won’t have to wear a dust mask while doing so!
The clumps, as we mentioned above, are extremely hard, and we had no issues with them falling apart or creating a paste during removal. Try to minimize how much you move them around and still be gentle when handling them, however. And speaking of removal: you will be amazed how long a bag of this stuff lasts.
We were seeing anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks on a busy multi-cat litter box. This can be attributed to the efficient clumping and the fact that you don’t find yourself having to empty the litter box as often.
Finally, these granules are on the smaller side. And while clay is a much heavier material than many other litter materials, the relatively small size of them does mean that you might experience some minor tracking. This is particularly true if you have a cat with long hair or a cat that likes to kick around in their litter box. But this is only a minor complaint.
Value – 
Clay litters are typically going to be your best choice if you are trying to save money. They are almost always cheaper than any of the all-natural cat litters and typically much cheaper than the quite expensive crystal litters available.
Boxiecat Cat Litter is going to run a bit more than most of the other clay cat litters on the market. And you will pay a bit extra if you decide to go with the Scented or Extra Strength products. But considering their performance and how a bag seems to last much longer than most other clay litters, we still consider it a reasonable price.
Overall Rating –
Boxiecat Cat Litters have quickly become one of our favorite product lineups on the market. No matter which specific type you go with, you will enjoy fantastic clumping, great odor-blocking, and low messiness/maintenance. For people who are sensitive to perfumes, Boxiecat Scent-Free delivers all the performance you need without having to rely on perfumes to mask cat odors.
And for those who prefer the perfume smell or that are after the maximum in odor-blocking performance, the Gently Scented and Extra Strength products will be just what you are looking for.
You may pay a little extra for these products than you would pay for your local grocery store generic cat litter but the performance and quality is night and day. Unless you are on the absolute tightest of budgets, we recommend spending a bit more and enjoying a fantastic clay cat litter.
