This is our Fresh Step Extreme Clay Cat Litter Review. Fresh Step Extreme Clay cat litter is specifically designed to handle the stinkiest of cat litter boxes. It contains CarbonPLUS which helps to provide advanced odor neutralization. Also, it also has antimicrobial agents that inhibit the growth of bacterial odors. It is important to note that this litter is not intended to clump. It is also 30% lighter than other comparable litters. It is available in 7, 14, 21, 40, and 45-pound bags.
Who This Cat Litter is Intended For
This cat litter is targeted at those households who are looking for a very powerful odor-fighting solution and are tired of other options falling short and also don’t want to deal with the hassle of removing clumps. Fresh Step feels that the combination of optimized clay as well as injected carbon technology will be the answer many people have been looking for.
While it is generally intended for single-cat households, you might still be able to get away using this in a busier litter box. Finally, people looking at this product are willing to spend a bit extra for a litter that works but still doesn’t want to open their wallet for a premium-tier product.
What Makes This Cat Litter Unique
This cat litter is unique in that it primarily focuses on odor control while being a non-clumping clay litter. A lot of the time non-clumping litters take an approach of “just replace it when it starts to smell bad” but this particular product actively tries to make long-lasting litter life be a priority, which is a refreshing approach.
Clumping Ability – N/A
This litter is not intended to clump.
Scent –
The clay in this litter has a sort of odd smell to it in of itself. It is not as overpowering as some of the competition but it is still not very pleasant. This product only does an average job of capturing cat smells. For some reason, it seems to struggle somewhat with masking the smell of cat urine, especially if multiple cats are using the box.
However, it does a much better job with feces. We are a bit disappointed that the odor-fighting performance isn’t better after the marketing that we see on this product.
Messiness –
Since this isn’t a clumping litter you have to interpret it slightly differently. Generally, we don’t recommend going through and trying to “clean” non-clumping litter. All you will do is make a mess and spread all of the urine and feces around. So if you leave this Cat litter alone and let it do its job, it isn’t that messy since you will throw it all away when you are done.
That being said, this cat litter is still pretty dusty. There are some issues with your cat tracking both dust as well as actual litter while using this product. Perhaps this could be because the litter is so light compared to most other offerings.
Value –

Expect to pay in the mid-priced area for this product online. For a clay litter this trends towards being on the higher end of the price range.
Overall Rating –
The Fresh Step Extreme Clay Cat Litter Review earns 2.5 out of 5 cats. Generally, non-clumping litters’ selling point is their ease of maintenance and low prices. Because of this, we aren’t sure why this product is so expensive, especially considering that the rest of its aspects are nothing amazing. It simply struggles too much with urine and the odor control time duration just isn’t what we hoped for. If the price was maybe half of what it is then we would say it is an acceptable purchase but honestly we aren’t excited about it at the current online price.
