This is our Fresh Step Lasting Power Scoopable Cat Litter Review. Fresh Step Lasting Power Scoopable cat litter features Fresh Step’s new CarbonLAST technology which is advertised as providing strong odor control for up to 14 days. This litter contains an antimicrobial agent that helps to inhibit the growth of bacterial odors on the litter. Finally, the clumping clay used is promised to be effective and easy to scoop. This product is available in 25 and 38-pound boxes.
Who This Cat Litter is Intended For
This cat litter is intended for those owners who might not always be able to get to cleaning their cat’s litter box promptly because of traveling, work, etc. It is optimized to have extra long odor control life while still trying to adhere to conventionally expected attributes such as adequate clumping and relatively easy disposal.
While not an absolute, it is generally encouraged to use this in single-cat households or multi-cat homes that have more than one litter box. Finally, this is intended for owners who are willing to pay a premium price for a product that works.
What Makes This Cat Litter Unique
This cat litter is unique in that it advertises 14-day odor protection, which is some of the longest we have seen any company advertising. This is a lofty goal and shows that Fresh Step must be very confident in the ability of their product. The other unique thing is that it attempts to accomplish this while being relatively straightforward: using conventional clumping clay with the addition of carbon and antimicrobial agents.
Clumping Ability –
The clumping clay used is quite effective, and both urine and feces are handled quite well. The clumps stay hard for long periods with minimal degradation, which is a necessity if they hope to meet their lofty 14-day odor control promise. Introducing multiple cats into a single box can sometimes prove to be a bit too much but this product isn’t marketed as being for multiple cats so we feel this isn’t too big of an issue.
Scent –
The smell is simply “alright”. It isn’t that the smell is terrible (there are much worse out there), but rather that there is just too much of it. Thankfully the intensity lessens after a few hours of sitting to the point where it is bearable. But whenever opening the bag or happening to put your face near the litter box you will likely get a pretty potent whiff. And to think your cat might have to go through this every time it goes to the litter box? That being said, the CarbonLAST technology does an excellent job of locking in the odor and for long periods. You can leave for days and come back knowing that there will still be little if any cat smells in the air.
Messiness –
Despite the good clumping ability, this is an extremely dusty cat litter. Dust will go everywhere in huge clouds of smoke and settle wherever it seems fit. Not only will your cat track this dust out of the box but you very well may as well!
If you try introducing this product to a busy litter box expect to spend way more time than you would like dusting around the litter box area. Thankfully dust is the only major issue with messiness as the actual cleanup of clumps and the rest of the litter is, for the most part, seamless.
Value –
This product can be yours typically in the premium-priced tier online. We aren’t super thrilled with such a high asking price.
Overall Rating –
The Fresh Step Lasting Power Scoopable Cat Litter Review earns 3 cats out of 5. The clumps and odor control are on point with this product, and it can meet the impressive 2-week odor control is advertises if used for a single cat. It is also relatively headache-free other than the dust and somewhat potent smell, but the price is pretty expensive. If you are desperate for a long-term odor solution or If you can find this close to a dollar per pound we would recommend it as a buy.
