This is our Fresh Step Multi-Cat Unscented Scoopable Cat Litter Review. Fresh Step Multi-Cat Unscented Scoopable cat litter is intended for multiple-cat households. The activated carbon and plant extracts help to eliminate odor while high-quality clay helps to absorb and trap liquids. The odor-blocking stays in place despite not using any perfumes or dyes, which makes this litter a good choice for cats or owners that have sensitive smells. This product is available in 20 and 25-pound boxes.
Who This Cat Litter is Intended For
This cat litter is intended for those who have busy litter boxes due to multiple cats and are struggling to find a product that can handle such a load. However, they don’t want to use a product that has harsh and artificial smells in it and would prefer to let the clumping and odor control built into the litter do the talking.
They prefer a conventional clumping clay formula but are ok with the inclusion of other features such as carbon. Finally, they are a little flexible on their pet budget but still want to try to avoid paying a premium for a product.
What Makes This Cat Litter Unique
This cat litter is unique because it tries to tackle a multi-cat litter box without using artificial scents. A busy litter box can be one of the most difficult things to keep in check in regards to odor, and taking away a common assistant in perfume shows that Fresh Step is confident that the other aspects of this litter are good. We also like the inclusion of unique features such as the activated carbon and plant extracts to assist with this matter.
Clumping Ability –
The clay formula this product uses is quite effective and does a good job of capturing all of the moisture from urine and feces and turning them into relatively small clumps. These clumps stay hard and do not use an inordinate amount of litter to do so, so a box of this litter should last for a while.
The clumps stay hard for several days, even with multiple cats moving around in the box, so maintenance should be relatively easy if you monitor the litter situation promptly. However, there have been cases where urine has essentially become “too hard” and stuck to the rest of the litter which makes cleanup somewhat frustrating.
Scent –
First off for being “unscented” this litter has a rather strong scent to it. It isn’t perfume but rather an odd chemical clay aroma. This is just part of working with clay but there are plenty of other unscented products on the market that also use clay that isn’t nearly as pungent. Perhaps this is the result of adding other components into the clay to assist with odor control. The litter does a good job of capturing the bad cat smells, however.
Messiness –
This specific product isn’t highly marketed as being low dust or dust free and for good reason. The clay it uses kicks up quite a bit of dust so even if you and your cat go with unscented due to sensitive smells you will still have to deal with the somewhat stinky dust kicking up and making a mess. This issue only gets worse the more cats that are using a given litter box. This dust also can track somewhat significantly. Thankfully the litter itself mostly stays put, although if you run into the urine concrete debacle mentioned above that the cleanup process could become quite laborious.
Value –

Online prices for this litter generally fall in the mid-priced tier. This is not great for a clay litter but not terrible, either. Those on a super limited pet budget may have to shop around for other solutions.
Overall Rating –
The Fresh Step Multi-Cat Unscented Scoopable Cat Litter Review earns 3 out of 5 cats. A decent option from the clumping ability alone, we feel it does an acceptable job of keeping multi-cat litter boxes in check in the odor department. The dust levels and the fact that for an unscented litter it does have a pretty powerful smell bump it down some but it will still be serviceable in this price range.
