Who This Cat Litter is Intended For

This cat litter is meant for cats who have particularly sensitive paws and struggle with using conventional crystal or clay-based cat litters.  Also, it is targeted at owners who want to go a more eco-friendly route and something that avoids using many of the harsh chemicals and perfumes common on other types of litter but still wants to take advantage of clumping capabilities.

Also, this product typically works best in slower litter boxes typical of single-cat households.  Finally, it is intended for those who are willing to spend a bit extra for a product that works as the price can be somewhat high.

What Makes This Cat Litter Unique

This product is unique because it is made of wood granules, which is a pretty uncommon material, but still has many of the typical properties that are common in clay and crystal cat litters such as clumping and good odor control (advertised as being up to 7 days).  Furthermore, despite using wood it is designed in a way so that it is gentle on cat paws, which many people wouldn’t expect when they think of wooden material.  We also like the high absorbency of the material, which is up to 500% of its weight.

Clumping Ability – 

Overall this litter clumps well and holds tightly.  This is true for both feces and urine but especially for the urine.  When exposed to any sort of liquid the wood pellet essentially soak it up and enlarge and harden, forming a tight ball.  We definitely can see the 500% liquid absorption at work, and it is beneficial.  Unfortunately, the clumps can be on the large size, which means you might use more product than you’d like.

Scent – 

This does a great job of masking odor for a fragrance-free product.  There is a subtle wood smell that is to be expected when using this material, but it is not at all harsh and somewhat pleasant.  As long as you are timely with removal (every couple days) this cat litter should take care of nearly all cat odor problems, and the product itself doesn’t smell bad either.

Messiness – 

Similar to other wood pellet products, the grains can be very large and not be able to sift through many conventional scoops.  Because of this, you are either wasting a lot of product or having to laboriously pick away at clumps to try to preserve the product.  This is both messy and time-consuming.

Also, the light pellets tend to stick to cat fur and be tracked outside of the box.  This might just be a negative consequence of going with a softer, paw-friendly material.  There is no dust associated with this product which is nice and the bonus that it can be disposed of via flushing is another pro.

Typically online this litter will run you in the premium-priced area.  As is typical, eco-friendly specialty cat litters fetch a much higher asking price.

Overall Rating – 

The Healthy Pet ökocat Soft Step Clumping Cat Litter Review earns 3 out of 5 cats.  Good clumping and good odor control as well as a good texture for cat’s paws, but these come at the cost of being a bit messy also being pricey.  However, we do appreciate the unique approach in using wood instead of the more common litter materials.  If your cat has sensitive paws and you are willing to dish out some extra money to make it happy then this product will perform well enough.
