Advertised Product Description
This is our Scoop Away Multi-cat Plus Crystals Cat Litter Review. Scoop Away Plus Crystals cat litter is advertised as being the best of both worlds: the strong clumping ability of clay plus the power of crystals for odor absorption. Also, it is fortified with an ammonia shield to help stop any potential growth of bacterial odors and can be used on both single cat and multi-cat boxes. This product comes in a 25-pound box.
Who This Cat Litter is Intended For
This cat litter is targeted towards typically single-cat owners or houses that have multiple litter boxes and are looking for an effective all-around solution. This includes not only the convenience of clumping which is common in clay litters but also an added odor boost that you get from including crystals in the mix. It is also intended for owners and cats who don’t mind an artificial scent to help with performance. Finally, it is good for those looking to watch their budget and find a viable product without breaking the bank.
What Makes This Cat Litter Unique
This cat litter is unique because it does a hybrid approach by mixing clay with crystals. This is relatively uncommon and we enjoy the thought process behind it. Even more impressive is that despite including crystals (which are typically quite expensive) Scoop Away still manages to sell this product for a reasonable price.
Clumping Ability –
The clumping potential of this litter is decent. While there are harder-clumping litters out there, they do so with the usage of solid clay. Unfortunately, when you incorporate elements other than clay to a litter then you might lose some of the benefits of solid clay. That being said, the clumps are still acceptable and should not be too much of a burden.
The clumps also tend to be average-sized. This means that a box of this cat litter will last about as long as you would expect. They manage to stay hard for several days and while the clumps are not rock-hard as other offerings, they should stay together well enough. It also does an acceptable absorption job of liquids.
Scent –
There is a rather powerful perfume scent that this product puts out. For cats or owners with sensitive smells or allergies, it might be too much when closely exposed to it. However, it does a great job of masking any cat odor that might arise. The crystals work well with the ammonia shield to stop any nasty smells in their track and stop them from trying to catalyze for multiple days. But we do wonder if the strong perfume scent was really necessary with the inclusion of the crystals?
Messiness –
This is a moderately dusty litter and some minor tracking outside of the box may occur. The smaller crystals in particular seem to track out of the box quite often, particularly if you have a handsy cat who likes to dig a lot. The clumps should stay hard enough for a couple of days to make removal easy but if you wait longer than this or have a busy litter box then they could potentially fall apart and create a sludgy mess.
Value –
This litter can generally be found in the budget and mid-price ranges online. This is at a level that we like to see crystal cat litters fall into (but they rarely can).
Overall Rating –
The Scoop Away Multi-cat Plus Crystals Cat Litter Review earns 3 cats out of 5. This is one of the few budget (or near budget) litters on the market that can incorporate crystals. Generally, the crystal-based litters cost substantially higher so this is one of the few opportunities to experience the benefits of crystals without opening up your pocketbooks deeply.
We can see the crystals working but they do take a bit of performance away from the clay component. It does an average to slightly above average job in clumping and odor-blocking and is about average messiness. Not the best thing in the world but worth a try if you are interested in trying out a hybrid litter for cheap.
