This is our Tidy Cats Yesterday’s News Original Cat Litter Review. Tidy Cat Yesterday’s News Original cat litter is unique in that it is made of recycled paper and even packaged in a recycled bag. Despite the more nature-friendly approach it still promises effective odor control and relatively low-maintenance with its low tracking feature. This product is available in 5-pound, 15-pound, and 30-pound packages.
Who This Cat Litter is Intended For
This cat litter is intended for those who are wanting to try a more eco-friendly approach in their litter, in this case by using recycled paper. This may be because of issues with fumes or dust from other types of litter or simply that you are wanting to use something better for the environment. It is also good for cats who might have sensitive paws and are uncomfortable walking on harder litter granules.
This cat litter is mostly targeted at single-cat households or places that have multiple litter boxes. Also, it is good for people who don’t want to deal with removing clumps as this product is non-clumping. Finally, it is meant for owners who are willing to spend a bit extra for a product if they are happy with its performance.
What Makes This Cat Litter Unique
This cat litter is unique because it is made of recycled paper. Judging by the name we might even assume it is made from recycled newspaper, which is cool! Despite the unconventional material used, Tidy Cats still believes that they have a product that can meet the performance needs of the user in regards to trapping in cat waste odors.
Clumping Ability – N/A
This product is not intended to clump in a conventional sense. Rather the presence of moisture will sort of attract the paper pellets together, forming a semi-hard mass. Keep in mind that this isn’t a full, hard, and encompassing clump but rather cat waste that has some paper stuck to it. For urine, it just breaks down the clumps into smaller pieces that almost resemble sawdust.
Scent –
The litter itself has essentially no smell to it, which is nice. This means that almost any cat, no matter how sensitive their sense of smell is, should be comfortable with this product. How well it covers up cat waste smells is dependent on a couple of factors. First, how exposed the feces are to the pellets. If the pellets can submerge around the feces then it does a pretty good job of locking in the smell for several days.
However, if it is fully exposed or even if the top is fully exposed to the open air then the smells can creep out. Urine is kept in check for the most part but if you have multiple cats using it or if their urine is especially stinky for some reason the paper pellets might not be able to completely handle it. This can open up the door to ammonia fumes.
Messiness –
The texture of this product is somewhat unique. It is essentially small cylinders. However, when compared to conventional clay granules they are much larger, meaning that it is harder for your cat to carry them out of the box and when it does happen they are easily identifiable and a breeze to pick up.
There can be minor dust that forms after a few days when the moisture breaks down some of the product but it is nothing major. Picking up the waste can be somewhat daunting as the clumps don’t harden like they do in a typical litter. As such, extra care needs to be taken to not make a stinky mess when maintaining the box.
Value –
Average online prices for this product are oftentimes in the mid to premium-price categories. Also, it is important to note that the availability of this cat litter can be sparse which can further drive up the asking price.
Overall Rating –
The Tidy Cats Yesterday’s News Original Cat Litter Review earns 2.5 out of 5 cats. A unique approach in terms of the shape and specifications of the litter but the result is pretty ordinary. It doesn’t clump per se which we wouldn’t mind seeing here and the price could be a bit lower to make it a more attractive buy. If you do decide to give this a go we encourage you to only try it with a single cat and go from there.
