America Litter Cat Litter Review

By Brandon F. on May 6, 2020

Advertised Product Description

America Litter Cat Litter is a brand that we recently learned about that is starting to make waves in the pet industry.  It has become increasingly popular in the UK and other areas of Europe and we were able to get our hands on some to try out.  Produced by a company called Tailmate, America Litter takes the proven simple approach of using quality clay without overloading the user with strong additives and chemicals.  They promise strong and quick clumping, great odor control, and low dust levels.  It is available in 7 and 15-kilogram bags and falls into the mid-price range.

Who This Cat Litter is Intended For

This is a good litter for those who prefer to stick with the tried and true clay cat litters.  Clay has time and time again been a favorite due to its lovely combination of great clumping, good odor control, and relatively low costs.  Specifically, this litter will be helpful for those cat owners who don’t have the time or desire to constantly have to monitor their cat’s litter box.

It is also good for cats and cat owners who may have an allergy or distaste for overwhelming litter perfumes.  And we have come to find out that this cat litter is available both in the UK as well as in the USA.

What Makes This Cat Litter Unique

This cat litter is unique in that it takes the proven method of clay and attempts to add a unique America Litter twist to make it stand out from its many competitors.  This is accomplished through Tailmate’s patented formula that promises quick clumping and easy scooping.  Beyond this, this brand doesn’t feel the need to overload the user with tons of perfumes.  They believe that the performance of their litter by itself is good enough to not warrant these things.

Clumping Ability –

Overall, we were very impressed by the clumping ability of this litter.  The clay does very well to form clumps around cat urine and the balls stay quite hard for several days.  The cat that tested this litter tends to have pretty solid feces so we didn’t get to test how the litter performs with more “runny” consistency, but we do not doubt that it would do quite well.  The clay seems to adhere to any moisture that it comes across and clump it together in easy to identify balls.

Scent –

There is a subtle perfume/clay odor with this product but it is by no means overpowering.  We don’t mind it and we feel that even those owners and cats with very sensitive allergies and smells shouldn’t be affected by it.  As for cat waste odors, the clumps seem to lock in the odor quite well for a few days.

The activated carbon combined with the high-quality clay puts cat waste odors in their place.  Most clay litters will require some maintenance, however.  After a few days of leaving the clumps, you may start to experience some cat odors.  We recommend trying to monitor the litter box at least twice a week to remove any clumps that you come across.

Messiness –

Being a clay litter, the granules are much heavier and denser than many of the other types of litter on the market (crystals, paper, wood, corn, etc.).  This makes them much more difficult to track out of the box.  That being said, these clay granules used in America Litter are a bit smaller in volume than the average clay granule we have come across so you may see it being kicked around a bit more.  We saw the occasional granule make its way out of the box but it wasn’t a huge deal.

As for dust levels, we are happy to report that there was very little.  Dust can be a common issue with many clay-based cat litters but Tailmate seems to have this issue in check.

Removing clumps is very easy and the hardened balls stay together quite well.  Gentle usage of your cat scoop should allow removal to go on without a hitch.

Our only complaint in regards to messiness comes with the design of the bag.  There is an overhead carrying handle which we love for transporting but don’t expect to be able to use it once the bag is opened.  We tested this theory with a few different people.  We gave them the opened bag and asked them to pour some of the litter out into the litter box.  Every single one of them instinctively went for the handle to hold it and try to pour.  The result ended up being spilled litter.  This isn’t a big deal but we think that perhaps there should be a note or image on how to properly tilt the bag and whether or not you should use the overhead handle while doing so.

Value –

Clay litters almost always lead the pack when it comes to asking prices.  They will tend to be the most affordable material to produce cat litter with which is great because they are also one of the best-performing!  The asking price for America Litter is a bit higher than many of the other clay litters on the market but it is still quite reasonable.  Of course, it can be tough to compete with the larger brands in pricing since.  Either way, the performance is very good and the slight upcharge is not a deal-breaker.

Overall Rating –

We came away from America Litter being quite impressed.  They have dialed in their patented clay formula that combines the conventional benefits of clay with their specialized small crystal-like shape and activated carbon.  The result is a clay litter that does a great job of handling cat waste odors and provides very strong and long-lasting clumps.  The litter perfume scent is subtle but acceptable as well.  Our only minor complaints are with the bit higher asking price and confusion with the bag design.  But for anybody who can acquire this product locally, we highly recommend trying it out.

America Litter Ultra Scooping Cat Litter Review

Advertised Product Description

America Litter Cat Litter sent us another one of their new products to test out.  This particular litter seems somewhat similar to their first product we tested (Ultra Odor Seal) but with a slightly tweaked formula that seems to prioritize clumping and scooping ability of odor-fighting.  This bentonite used is a bit on the small side which comes with some unique benefits as well as some potential challenges.  It is available in 7-kb bags and can be found in the mid-price range.

Who This Cat Litter is Intended For

This litter is great for those who are after a clay-based cat litter that focuses on great clumping.  It is also good for those people (and cats) who prefer handling smaller granules.  Due to higher levels of tracking, we feel that this cat litter is best-suited for single-cat litter boxes and for cats who aren’t as aggressive when stirring out the litter.

What Makes This Cat Litter Unique

The very small clay granules instantly make this product stand out from many of the other traditional clay-based litters on the market.  Also, finding a happy medium between clumping ability and odor control is always a good approach to take.  Finally, being able to use a bentonite material and promise that it is 99.6% dust-free certainly makes this product stand out.

Clumping Ability –

The clumping ability is very good here and is better than the other America Litter product we have checked out.  Tailmate’s tweaks to the bentonite recipe (with zeolite) certainly pay off here and the clumps form quickly and stay hard for a couple of days.  The smaller granules also have the added benefit of providing great clumping while not using nearly as much product to form the clumps.  This is doubly beneficial in that it means that a bag of this cat litter lasts longer and it also means that the clumps are smaller and lighter.  Of particular note is how quickly this product absorbs all liquid.  You don’t have to worry about the paste-like residue that can cake on litter box walls here.

Scent –

There is a subtle industrial scent to the litter that is combined with some sort of aromatics.  The result is relatively pleasant and shouldn’t upset too many owners or cats with sensitive allergies.  For those who prefer powerful perfume smells, you will be out of luck.  As for odor control, the great clumping also helps to lock in odor for several days.  While we might have seen a slight downgrade in odor-fighting ability when compared to America Litter Ultra Odor Seal Cat Litter, the differences are very slight and shouldn’t bother most people.   We also noted that the strong ammonia smell associated with cat urine was kept in check very well.

Messiness –

Our one gripe with this product is with the tracking.  The smaller clay granules are great for clumping but are much more notorious for being tracked outside of the litter box.  If you have a cat that is very “handsy” with their litter box or has a cat that has long hair, you will likely find quite a few of these little granules being kicked out or tracked out of the litter box.  Outside of this, we are very content with how easy it is to identify and remove hardened clumps.  The clumps remain hard and allow you to easily scoop them without the worry of them falling apart and making a mess.

Value –

Typically, bentonite cat litters will fall into the budget price tier since the cost to manufacture them is much lower than with other cat litters made of wood, silica gel, etc.  That being said, America Litter tends to fall into the mid-price range.  This makes it more expensive than most other clay litters on the market.  While it still should be within budget for most people, those on a very tight budget or that have to buy litter for several cats may not want to spend the extra money for the unique benefits of this product.

Overall Rating –

Overall, we are pretty impressed with America Litter Ultra Scooping Cat Litter.  The smaller clay granules do a fantastic job of creating hard and long-lasting clumps.  The added side effect of this is very good odor control that should be able to compete with just about any other clay-based litter in the industry.  That being said, we do wish that the tracking wasn’t such an issue and we wouldn’t hate to see the asking price be slimmed down some to better-compete with some of the larger brands on the market.  Still, if you happen to get your hands on a bag of this litter, you shouldn’t be disappointed.
