Cat’s Pride Scoopable Unscented Cat Litter Review

Advertised Product Description

Cat’s Pride Scoopable Unscented Cat Litter combines the proven clumping ability of clay with a perfume-free recipe designed for those owners or cats with sensitive allergies.  By using the popular Cat’s Pride approach, the great clay-based clumps help to lock in cat odor for multiple days.  Also, despite not being a lightweight formula, Cat’s Pride states that you will still enjoy up to 50% more litter per pound when compared to the competition.  It comes in 12-pound jugs.

Who This Cat Litter is Intended For

Cat’s Pride Scoopable Unscented Cat Litter is designed for those cat owners who want the simple and effective clumping ability of clay litters but would rather do without the sometimes harsh chemical smells that go along with scented litters.  Also, it is good for those who prefer to flush their cat litter (although we always recommend disposing of cat litter in the trash when possible).  Finally, since there are some inherent dust levels and tracking associated with most clay litters, it is good for owners and cats who don’t mind dealing with some extra dust.

What Makes This Cat Litter Unique

This cat litter is special in that it takes a very simple approach where it lets the inherent benefits of clay do all the talking.  It doesn’t feel that it needs extra help from exotic materials, powerful perfumes, or proprietary additional features.  There is a reason why clay litters are far and beyond the most popular type of cat litter and Cat’s Pride is following that approach here.

Clumping Ability –

Similar to most of Cat’s Pride’s other cat litters, their Scoopable Unscented Cat Litter has very good clumping thanks to their excellent clay material.  The clumps form quickly and stay hard for several days, making identification and disposal simple.  It can properly handle both cat urine as well as cat feces but if we had to pick one, we would say that it does best with feces.

Another added benefit is that the clumps, while plenty hard, are easily broken apart in a sewer line which makes this product “flush-friendly”.  However, as we mentioned earlier, we still encourage you to dispose of cat litter in a conventional trash can where possible.

Scent –

One of the big selling points of this product (outside of its clumping ability) is in its odor-free attribute.  True enough, there is little smell outside of the subtle clay smell that is present in just about every clay litter (and, as far as we are concerned, basically unavoidable).  Also, the cat waste stays nicely packed inside the clumps which minimize the whiffs of foul cat waste odors that will come your way.

That being said, you will not get quite the odor-fighting ability of a perfume cat litter so you will have to be timelier in litter box maintenance.  Also, we recommend sticking with 1-cat litter boxes if you plan on using this product.

Messiness –

The biggest issue we have with this product (and one that is very commonplace among clay litters), is in the dust and tracking levels.  While you don’t see nearly the tracking issues that are present in many of Cat’s Pride Lightweight cat litters, it is still present and above average among other clay litters on the market.

The other notable problem is dust.  This is a pretty dusty litter, particularly right after pouring.  And if you have a cat that is very “handsy” with the litter then you can expect it to be kicked up then as well.  For longer-haired cats, you will likely have to deal with some of this dust sticking to their fur as well.  The one bright spot is that the clumps stay hard and are easy to remove without falling apart and causing a mess.

Value –

and save

While clay litters are almost always your cheapest bet, this product is a bit more expensive than many.  You will often pay a slight premium for Cat’s Pride products simply because of their name but as far as performance is concerned there isn’t anything here to justify the upcharge.  Yes, it clumps very well and does a good job of locking in odors, but so do other cheaper brands.

Overall Rating –

Cat’s Pride Scoopable Unscented Cat Litter is an adequate performer in the somewhat congested scoopable clay litter market.  The clumps that are formed are tough and easy to dispose of, and the lack of perfume does not severely impact its ability to fight cat waste odors and is perfect for those cats or owners with sensitive allergies of senses of smell.

However, this product does suffer from some noticeable tracking and dust issues.  Also, the asking price, while still reasonable, is higher than several other close competitors that have near equal performance.  This litter is perfectly fine but for those on a very tight pet budget, you can find similar for cheaper elsewhere.
