ProSense Cat Litter Review

ProSense has been around for a while but we had only known of them for primarily medical-related products for cats and dogs.  These including things such as dental, joint, skin and coat, and vitamin solutions.  However, they appear to have expanded and now offer up a couple of types of cat litter as well.  We quickly go over their two types of cat litter below and then break down each into greater detail with our full reviews below.

This is our ProSense Fresh Results Crystal Cat Litter Review.  ProSense Fresh Results Crystal Cat Litter is another entry into the competitive crystal litter market and is targeting people who enjoy the benefits of silica-based cat litters and don’t mind the inherent negatives.  Similar to most crystal lines on the market, this product excels at locking in odors by absorbing nearly all of the odor-causing moisture that exists in cat waste.  It also is essentially dust-free and has no fumes.  It is available in 8-pound bags.

Who This Cat Litter is Intended For

ProSense is intended for those owners who are sick of dealing with dusty and smelly litters that don’t do a good job of handling cat waste odors.  It is also good for people with multiple cats or that live in small homes or apartments where even a subtle cat waste smell can run rampant.  That being said, asking prices on these (and all crystal litters) are higher than most other products so interested parties need to be aware of that.

What Makes This Cat Litter Unique

This cat litter is unique because it is trying to compete in the very competitive crystal cat litter market but following a tried and true method yet trying to put a small ProSense “twist” on it to gain popularity.  Beyond that, there isn’t a lot here that we haven’t seen performed in other crystal litters.  That isn’t a bad thing as silica crystals do such a great job of locking in odor that you really shouldn’t have to mess with the formula much.

Scent – 

There is essentially no litter smell associated with this product.  This is one of the biggest selling points of crystal cat litters and why many owners with sensitive allergies or that own cats with sensitive allergies go for them.  As for how it handles dealing with cat waste odors, the silica crystals soak up any moisture that it comes in contact with.

This is particularly true with cat urine which oftentimes is the source of more pungent smells than cat feces!  By soaking up this moisture, the crystal beads soak up most of the odor-causing elements as well.  In other words, you will smell next to no pungent odors when properly using this litter, even if you are nearby.

Messiness – 

Probably the biggest gripe of crystal cat litters (outside of the high asking price) is how messy they can be.  This is because of several factors.  First, you don’t enjoy clumping ability here so trying to manually remove cat waste is much more challenging and can ultimately be much messier.  That is why many silica gel-based cat litter brands recommend not trying to remove the clumps and rather stir them until the entire batch is full.

Then, you would simply dump the entire box of contents and refill with fresh litter.  The second major issue is that silica beads are quite small and also lightweight.  This makes them much easier to be tracked out of the litter box.  And to exacerbate this issue, ProSense crystal cat litter beads are somewhat jagged which can make them stick to cat fur more easily.  Don’t be surprised if you find these little beads all over the floor around your litter box and you will realize it when you accidentally step on one barefoot.  They hurt!

Value – 

This product is well into the premium price tier when looking at the standard dollar per pound ratio that we judge cat litters by.  This is not surprising as essentially every single crystal cat litter falls into this price category.  For those after the very potent and specialized odor-fighting ability of these types of litter, the high asking price is simply the cost of admission.  That being said, a bag of this stuff does tend to last for quite a while which helps to maximize your dollars.

Overall Rating – 

ProSense Fresh Results Crystal Cat Litter is another contribution to the ever-growing crystal cat litter market.  We have noticed that this type of litter is becoming more and more popular and many people are switching over from standard clay-based litters to this type.  With it come some unique benefits and trouble areas that are pretty consistent no matter which brand you go with.  This specific product is very similar to most of the other silica gel litters on the market both in performance and asking price.

This is our ProSense Fresh Results Clumping Cat Litter Review.  ProSense Fresh Results Clumping Cat Litter is the clumping product offered by Pro-Sense and it tries to combine the highly desired attribute of good clumping with a more natural-smelling and eco-friendly material in corn cob.  This unique formula utilizes an advanced triple-action odor-control system and the company proudly exclaims that its formula clumps twice as well as clay.  It comes in 10-pound bags.

Who This Cat Litter is Intended For

This cat litter is designed for those owners who want to enjoy clumping ability but are turned off of the fumes, dust, and heavyweight of traditional clay litters.  This product is also good for cats with bad allergies or that have sensitive paws that may hurt when stepping on the sharp and hard edges of the clay.  It is a bit pricey given the weight, however, so potential owners will need to be willing to spend a bit extra to enjoy this unique cat litter.

What Makes This Cat Litter Unique

It goes without saying, but this cat litter is unique.  There aren’t a lot of other products that are tackling cat litter through corn cob so that by itself makes this stand out.  Also, Pro-Sense not only states that this material will clump but that it clumps twice as good as clay!  Finally, we have seen that many other eco-friendly litters may struggle with handling cat waste odors but Pro-Sense stands behind the odor-fighting ability here thanks to their triple action odor-fighting approach.

Scent – 

There is a subtle pine-like scent associated with this product.  We aren’t sure if this is the natural smell of the corn product used or ProSense added it to the mix but we found it much more pleasant than many of the harsh chemical perfumes that clay litters have.

However, there still are some people that are turned off by the smell so you will need to smell it for yourself and see where it stands.  As for handling cat waste odors, the fact that the clumps don’t form into air-tight balls means that some of the cat waste can leak out.  We particularly noticed some ammonia-like fumes coming from locations in the litter box that were concentrated with urine.  However, overall it still manages to fight odors better than most other eco-friendly products on the market.

Clumping Ability – 

We do appreciate ProSense trying to deal with clumping with a material other than clay.  That being said, we feel that this material simply doesn’t clump as well as most of your traditional clay litters (despite ProSense’s claims).  The corn does clump and handles feces better than urine but the clumps simply aren’t as hard as they typically are with some of the higher-ranking clay litters.

One unique benefit, however, is that the clumps don’t seem to require as much litter material.  This is good because it means that you don’t have to remove as much litter when removing clumps which lengthen how long a particular bag will last.  Pro-Sense also apparently got the memo on this as they advertise on their packaging that a 10-pound bag of their product is the equivalent of a 20-pound bag of traditional litter.  While we can’t say for certain the difference is that extreme, it certainly is noticeable and makes an impact overall.

Messiness – 

Corn is much lighter than most clay litter granules so they do track a bit more.  That being said, don’t expect nearly the level of tracking you experience with crystal litters or other natural litters that utilize things such as a newspaper or pine chips.  The clumps should stay in one piece if you are careful with them but if you happen to accidentally drop one or bump it against the litter box wall it may fall apart, resulting in a mess.  This is another issue that we have seen time and time again with non-clay litters and it also the case here.

Value – 

This cat litter falls into the premium price range.  Natural cat litters tend to be more expensive than conventional litters and we see that pattern yet again here.  That being said, a bag of this stuff does last longer than a similarly-sized bag of clay litter so that does help your dollar go a bit further.

Overall Rating – 

ProSense Fresh Results Clumping Cat Litter takes a refreshing and unique approach of using corn cob and trying to match the clumping and odor-fighting performance of other clumping litters that are typically made of clay.  Overall, it does fall a bit short matching up to clumping ability and odor control of the top clay odors but it doesn’t have to deal with the strong fumes and heavyweight of clay, either.

We have found that natural litters are a “love or hate” type thing so if you are someone who values more eco-friendly solutions and is willing to pay the premium price tag for it then, compared to other similar products on the market, this one performs just as well as them if not better.
