Arm & Hammer Super Scoop Fragrance-Free Cat Litter Review

Advertised Product Description

This is our Arm & Hammer Super Scoop Fragrance-Free Cat Litter Review.  Arm & Hammer Super Scoop Fragrance-Free Clumping Litter is an odor-free litter that consists of powerful baking soda crystals and ammonia odor block formula to help combat the toughest odors on contact.  Being fragrance-free, it is marketed for those cats and cat owners that are sensitive or allergic to particular types of smell.  Arm & Hammer advertises great clumping, 99% dust-free experience, and low tracking.  This litter is available in 14, 20, and 26.3-pound boxes.

Who This Cat Litter is Intended For

This product is typically directed at households with a single cat or multiple litter boxes for multiple cats and who value a combination of good clumping and odor control without the requirement of chemical smells or perfumes to help mask cat odors.  Also, it is a target product for those on a tight budget and someone who places saving money at the top of their priorities when shopping for a litter.

What Makes This Cat Litter Unique

This litter tries to meet expectations for all of the normal “wants” of a cat litter (good clumps, nice odor control, etc.) while not utilizing perfumes and also keeping the costs down so that it stays in the budget category.  While this might seem like a relatively simple task, it is not an easy thing to do so we commend this litter for trying.

Clumping Ability – 1.5 star

Despite its claims, there are some definite clumping issues with this litter.  The litter almost has a sandy feel and, unfortunately, the clumps reflect this.  They are soft and break apart easily.  The cat urine has been known to sit on top of the litter and form a sort of puddle, resulting in the cat stepping in its urine and litter sticking to the bottom of its paws.  We don’t at all recommend trying to use this for a busy litter box as the clumps simply can’t keep up with the introduction of additional cat waste.

Scent – 1 star

For being “fragrance-free” this litter has an extremely strong smell that many people dislike more than the smell of cat urine and feces!  It has an artificial powder-like smell that is very pungent and can spread through an entire room with ease.

Also, since the clumping ability of this product is questionable, the cat smells are easily dispersed when the clumps fall apart during moving or when it is being disposed of.  Furthermore, once the clumps are broken down they struggle to go back to retaining the odors, so you are stuck with them.

Messiness – 2.5 star

One of the few positives of this litter is the lack of dust.  It is one of the least-dusty conventional litters around.  However, while it may not transfer dust, it does transfer plenty of the litter itself since it is easily tracked onto cat paws.  It isn’t an overly lightweight litter, so perhaps it is the shape of the granules this is causing it.  We aren’t sure.  Also since a lot of the liquid isn’t captured within the litter, a paste-like concoction is formed and easily sticks to the walls of the cat box, making clean up and maintenance quite burdensome.

This product is available at the top of the budget price range which isn’t terrible.  It makes it easier to overlook some of the issues that we have with this cat litter (but that are still present).

Overall Rating – 2 star

The Arm & Hammer Super Scoop Fragrance-Free Cat Litter Review earns just 2 out of 5 cats.  Despite being a cheaper litter, it does everything pretty poorly.  Clumping is way off and the smell from the litter itself is simply awful, to the point where you might wish it smelled more like cat waste.  The few bright points it has are simply trumped by the negatives and even at a cheaper price that dips way down into the lower tier, we consider this a risky purchase.
