This is our Fresh Step Crystals Cat Litter Review.  Fresh Step Crystals cat litter is a 100% crystal cat litter that is advertised as absorbing moisture and stopping odor 5x better than the leading clay cat litter.  The crystals are also significantly lighter than most clay-based products which make moving and replacing the product much easier.  Furthermore, the crystals minimize dust and also help in the scooping of non-clumped cat waste.  This product is available in 4, 8, and 10-pound bags.

Who This Cat Litter is Intended For

This cat litter is intended for those who are after the very best in odor and moisture control and are willing to venture away from conventional litter materials such as clay to achieve this.  They will typically have a single-cat household or multiple litter boxes for their multiple cats.

Also, they don’t enjoy or have the time to remove clumps and would prefer to simply mix the cat waste when necessary and also empty the entire contents when the litter is exhausted.  Finally, they are flexible in their pet budget and willing to pay a premium for a product that works for them and their cat.

What Makes This Cat Litter Unique

This litter is unique in that it is made entirely out of crystals, and Fresh Step believes that doing so will result in a great performing product that can easily handle odor and moisture.  It takes the “less is more” approach, hoping that their product will perform longer and better despite not coming in huge bags, having clumping attributes (rather you are expected to stir the waste into the box), and coming at a premium price tag.

Clumping Ability – N/A

This is not a clumping litter.  Rather you are intended to take out the solids and stir in the urine into the rest of the box.

Scent – 

The crystals are scented but the smell is not overpowering and, after a short period, is subdued.  The product does an excellent job of masking cat odor for multiple days.  That is impressive considering that there is no clumping with this product so often the solids and liquids are simply exposed to air.

After a few days, you are encouraged to both remove the solids and mix in the liquid waste.  If you don’t do this promptly the smell of urine can creep in.  Also, if you have multiple cats using the box the urine could overpower the box after a few days even with proper stirring.  However, for 1 or 2 cats it will be effective for quite some time.

Messiness – 

There is essentially no dust with this product since it doesn’t have any clay.  Some of the crystals can get kicked out of the box and tracked, however.  Cleanup is also quite simple since you basically just empty it and there really isn’t any paste-like concoction that is formed but rather you’ll just smell the crystals and know it is time to refresh the box.

You are expected to mix in the cat waste which can get a bit messy if you try mixing everything too quickly, however.

This litter will generally run well into the premium-priced tier.  We are used to crystal cat litters being among the most expensive but we still can’t give this a good rating because of that.

Overall Rating – 

The Fresh Step Crystals Cat Litter Review earns 2.5 out of 5 cats.  For being a crystal litter it does what it is intended to pretty well.  Good odor absorption without overpowering perfumes and relatively easy to monitor and maintain are two definite positives.  But for such a price premium?

We are a bit disappointed that despite not being a clumping litter we are still expected to have to mix the contents promptly.  If you are dead-set on a crystal-based litter then this one’s performance shouldn’t disappoint but we have a hard time justifying the extreme price when there are other much cheaper options that can perform almost as well.
