Fresh Step Odor Shield Cat Litter Review

Last Updated by Brandon F. on May 19, 2020

Advertised Product Description

This is our Fresh Step Odor Shield Scented Cat Litter Review.  A classic litter by Fresh Step that helped get them on the map.  It contains activated carbon, plant extracts, and a fragrance that is activated by paw movement which means every time your cat uses it a refreshing smell will be injected into the air.  Made of clumping clay, this litter guarantees tight clumps and a 10-day odor control shield.  Available in 7, 12, 14, 20, 25, and 38-pound boxes and a 42-pound bag.

Who This Cat Litter is Intended For

This cat litter is targeted towards people who are looking for a relatively long-term odor fighter that takes advantage of conventional clumping clay.  The target user will typically have a single cat or multiple litter boxes if they have more than one cat.  They and their cat are also comfortable around artificial perfumes that assist with odor control.  Finally, their pet budget is a little flexible and they will pay a bit more for a product that works well for them and their cat.

What Makes This Cat Litter Unique

This product is unique because it has claw-activated carbon that is kicked up every time your cat scoops the litter.  This is a cool feature and helps to maximize the life and performance of a given batch of cat litter.  Also, Fresh Step feels that they can achieve a rather impressive 10-day continuous odor control with this recipe.

Clumping Ability – 4.5 star

This litter overall clumps well.  As promised, the clumps are hard and relatively small.  This makes maintenance easy.  The clumps also generally stay at the surface which helps.  The clay used is quite absorbent and very little if any cat waste makes it to the bottom of the box, which is where bacteria and ultimately the pungent smells come from.

Keep in mind that the clumps can start to fall apart if they are moved so this might be a slight issue in very busy litter boxes.  Also, if you have cats that tend to be more aggressive when mixing with their paws, it could result in some slight messes.

Scent – 2.5 star

The scent this product uses is very strong, and not in a good way.  It has an almost industrial, burning sensation to it that lingers for long periods and can be uncomfortable for cat or cat owners’ eyes and allergies.  Be sure to try this in small batches initially to make sure it meshes well with your pet.  The odor control, however, is quite good.  The only thing you will generally smell while using this is the artificial fragrance and not the waste, which we will choose every time.  Also, we can see the movement-activated carbon at work and can tell it lengthens the life of the litter.

Messiness – 2.5 star

This litter has way too much dust.  When your cat uses it you should expect there to be clouds of dust being kicked up.  Also, while pouring it into the box or removing it expect the dust to get all over your clothes and potentially inhaled by you if you aren’t careful.

At least clumping cleanup is easy as the advanced clay that is used helps combat potential mushiness that can occur when too much liquid is introduced over time.  As we mentioned above, this means that you will typically have hard clumps as long as they aren’t moved much.

Overall Rating – 3 star

The Fresh Step Odor Shield Scented Cat Litter Review earns 3 out of 5 cats. This product hits it out of the park on in the clumping department and we like the paw-activated carbon which bumps up the performance another notch.  However, it does have some issues with its scent and how dusty it is.  If you are willing to put up with these issues then it can still be a good choice given the typical asking price.
