Since this isn’t a clumping litter then it is intended that the owner either remove and replace the litter when it begins to smell or remove areas of the crystals that have become fully saturated from moisture absorption.  The latter isn’t as thorough and some smells might creep through but it will lengthen the life of the litter significantly.

Messiness – 

When the crystals absorb moisture, they sort of break down into an almost powder-like consistency.  This concoction can sometimes be tracked out of the box and also stick to your cat’s paws or fur.  However, it is nothing major.  There is also relatively little dust.  The crystals are very absorbent and when they run their course they will let you know all the while avoiding sticking to the walls of the litter box which saves on having to scrape the walls.
