Premium Choice Extra Strength with Baking Soda cat litter is advertised as bumping up the odor control a notch from their original clumping litter through the inclusion of powerful baking soda. Also, superior absorption, low tracking, and low dust are offered while still being acceptable for multi-cat boxes and for cats who might be sensitive to fragrances. This product is available in 16-pound jugs and 25 and 50-pound bags.
Who This Cat Litter is Intended For
This cat litter is designed to handle the most demanding litter boxes, oftentimes shared by multiple cats. It is also targeted towards cats and owners who prefer a traditional clay litter over some of the more exotic materials on the market. Also, they prefer the keep the clumping ability as well as using natural scents to try to mask smells. Finally, those who are trying to watch their pet budget should also look at this product as it is typically quite affordable.
What Makes This Cat Litter Unique
This cat litter is unique in that it uses baking soda crystals mixed in with the clay. Premium Choice is confident that this ramps up the effectiveness of this product in handling high-traffic litter boxes that might put out a lot of negative odors. We are impressed with this company’s confidence to go head-on against what can be a very challenging task.
Clumping Ability –
This product only has “decent” clumping. The clumps do generally form but they can be on the softer side and can fall apart while being moved or cleaned, especially after sitting for long periods. It also can struggle with urine, especially when urine touches clumps that already exist. This causes them to fall apart and things can get quite messy. Unfortunately, this scenario can be quite common when multiple cats are sharing a box and is a definite reason for some concern.
When this does happen, you will have to manage a powerful concoction of both cat waste and ammonia. Not a fun experience!
Scent –
The litter itself has a modest smell to it that is generally not overpowering for most. The baking soda most likely helps in subduing some of the natural smell. In regards to fighting cat odors, it does a very good job with feces. Even in the case where a clump might fall apart and re-release the odors, the litter can recapture these odors on time. Urine odor, on the other hand, seems to be more prevalent especially in multi-cat boxes. The smell of ammonia can seem to linger after a few days.
Messiness –
There is some minor tracking associated with this litter, but nothing too bad. There can also be some dust that kicks up when it moves around and some of this may stick to your cat but again there are much worse out on the market. The biggest issue is when trying to clean and the clumps fall apart. This is unfortunately somewhat common if you can’t get to the clumps within a couple of days.
Also, the lack of absorbency for extreme amounts of liquids is noticeable and if you let it go too long you are left with a mushy mess that sticks to everything. In other words, timely maintenance with this litter is essential or you are in for a big mess.
Value –
This product is generally available online in the budget-price range. We appreciate this very attractive price point.
Overall Rating –
The Premium Choice Extra Strength with Baking Soda Cat Litter Review earns 2.5 out of 5 cats. A very “average” litter, as the rating suggests. At the price point of this product you can’t be too picky and this honestly this product is serviceable. However, a combination of struggles in both the clumping and odor department after a relatively short period leaves some major doubts in our mind, particularly if you plan on applying this to a high-traffic litter box.
