Scoop Away Super Clump Unscented Cat Litter Review

Last Updated by Brandon F. on June 3, 2020

Advertised Product Description

This is our Scoop Away Super Clump Unscented Cat Litter Review.  Scoop Away Super Clump Unscented cat litter promises the strong clumping power and effective odor control of the other Scoop Away lines but without any perfumes or dyes, making it better for cats that might have sensitive allergies or sense of smell.  It is fortified with Ammonia Shield to help destroy litter box odors on contact and also stop the growth of potential bacterial odors.  This product is available in 14 and 25-pound boxes.

Who This Cat Litter is Intended For

This cat litter is intended for those owners who are in search of great, long-lasting clumps.  This is often because they may not have time to check the litter box every day so they need something that will last.  Also, they or their cats are sensitive towards the potentially powerful artificial perfumes that scented cat litters often use.  They are after a conventional clay litter that will meet their requirements for their single cat or slower-traffic litter box.  Finally, they are searching for all of this while trying to stick to a pretty tight budget.

What Makes This Cat Litter Unique

This cat litter is unique because it proudly exclaims its long-term clumping abilities while using a simple clay mixture.  Also, it prioritizes clumping while still being able to handle odors despite not using artificial perfumes to mask cat odors.  And all of this for what is a reasonable price.

Clumping Ability – 2.5 star

Clumping ability is on-par for a clay litter.  The clumps harden relatively quickly and stay so long enough for most people to be able to properly dispose of them.  They can get a bit mushy after a few days but unless you are aggressive while removing them then they should stay in one piece.  This is important because this appears to be the main factor that this product advertises on its packaging.

One small issue is that urine can have a tendency to creep towards the bottom and if you don’t change out the litter quick enough, the entire bottom will form a sort of sludge that is super sticky and a nightmare to remove.  Thankfully, this can be mostly avoided with timely litter box maintenance.

Scent – 3 star

Despite being “unscented” there is still some smell to this.  It is not overpowering but for cats that are extremely sensitive to smell, it might be an issue.  In regards to making cat odors, the Ammonia Shield does a good job and this, coupled with the good clumping, means that very rarely will you get a whiff of anything foul.

Towards the end of the lifecycle, urine smell can become noticeable, however.  This is why we advise against the “never dump” mentality that Scoop Away advertises.  While this may work on feces over time the urine tracks to the bottom of the box and when this happens there is a foul mess that is also a perfect medium for bacteria growth.

Messiness – 2 star

This is a very dusty product.  The dust is kicked up quite easily and can also be tracked because it sticks right to cat fur and paws.  Clumps are easy to remove, however.  If you decide to never dump this litter you should be prepared for a lot of scraping off the bottom when the concrete-like litter and urine concoction welcomes you.  This can be a bit of a challenge because many people would interpret this as being a litter you only have to check occasionally but if you let things slip too far it can become a huge nuisance.

Value – 3 star

Online average prices are around the budget to mid-priced areas.  This is right down the middle for clay cat litters.  We are neither excited or overly upset at this price.

Overall Rating – 2.5 star

The Scoop Away Super Clump Unscented Cat Litter Review earns 2.5 cats out of 5.  A pretty typical budget litter that has some issues but hopes you will overlook them at a decent price.  It does a decent job of locking and odors and the clumping does last for a while, but calling it unscented is a bit of stretch.  If there is nothing else available it will work but even for the relatively decent price there are better choices that clump better and clean up much easier.
