This is our So Phresh Odor Control Paper Pellet Cat Litter Review. So Phresh Odor Control Paper Pellet cat litter is made of special paper fibers that are combined with proprietary odor ingredients that work together to help neutralize ammonia odors instantly. Also, the paper is biodegradable and is designed to be so absorbent that it doesn’t break apart or cake on the bottom when the litter is wet. This product is available in 25-pound bags.
Who This Cat Litter is Intended For
This cat litter is typically targeted at single-cat households or houses that have multiple litter boxes to share amongst their cats. Also, it is good for cats and owners who do not enjoy clay or crystal-based litters because of dust, allergies, etc but don’t mind the use of artificial perfumes to help fight odor. Not to mention this is also more eco-friendly.
Furthermore, this is not a clumping litter so it might work better with people who can’t or don’t want to remove clumps regularly. Finally, it is good for people who can afford to spend a bit more for a product that meets their needs.
What Makes This Cat Litter Unique
This cat litter is unique because it is made of paper pellets, which is a very uncommon ingredient to use and also better for the environment. Despite this unique approach, So Phresh feels that they have a great product that can effectively absorb and trap odor without the use of clay, crystals, or even clumping ability.
Clumping Ability – N/A
This litter is not designed to clump. Rather it breaks down the odor and absorbs the moisture. It is scoopable, however, and this is recommended if you wish to prolong the life of the litter. That being said, once a certain amount of moisture hits the litter and breaks it down to a certain point it will lose its absorbency and will need to be replaced.
Scent –
Being essentially paper, there is no harsh artificial smell associated with this litter. There is a subtle wood-like smell that vaguely resembles mulch but it is not overpowering and not off-putting. It does a decent job of absorbing feces odors for several days, but it is still recommended that you remove the solids promptly to help avoid the smells coming out since this litter doesn’t clump.
It also does a good job initially in absorbing the urine smells by breaking down the litter. But since ammonia smells are much more difficult to remove, some scents of ammonia can arrive more quickly and can become very overpowering if the litter is left in too long.
Messiness –
While it isn’t clumping, it is encouraged that you remove the solids as necessary to prolong the litter life. We are a bit torn on this as one of the benefits of non-clumping litters is that you don’t have to worry about removing waste but in this case you essentially are. The urine breaks down the paper into a sort of sawdust-like material and if too much moisture is exposed it can get a bit sticky and can stick to the walls of the box and the cat itself. Surprisingly being a lightweight material tracking isn’t all that bad and there is essentially no dust which is nice.
Value –
Prices for this product vary but typically fall in the mid to premium-priced range. This is quite high for most cat litters but since this is a specialty paper-based product it isn’t too extreme.
Overall Rating –
The So Phresh Odor Control Paper Pellet Cat Litter Review earns 3 out of 5 cats. Generally, the specialty litter materials have a bit of baggage, either via their odor absorption, clumping specifics, or the price tag. In this case, none of these are major concerns although the price is a bit high. We were a bit turned off with the recommendation to remove the waste regularly vs. simply dumping as that takes the whole benefit of non-clumping litter away. For being an eco-friendly option it does everything well enough to warrant a soft recommendation from us.
