Advertised Product Description
This is our Tidy Cats 4 in 1 Strength Cat Litter Review. Tidy Cats 4 in 1 Strength cat litter is advertised as tracking down all four offenders of clean: ammonia odors, urine odors, fecal odors, and weak/messy clumps. This is accomplished through a 99.6% dust-free product. Also, it has a powerful clumping agent that results in hard clumps fast. This product is available in 14 and 20-pound jugs and 35-pound pails.
Who This Cat Litter is Intended For
This cat litter is intended for those litter boxes that have struggled in the past to lock away all sources of odor. This can be common in multi-cat boxes where other products simply get overwhelmed too quickly by excess urine or feces. This product is good for those who are wanting to put odor-fighting at the top of their list of needs and are willing to stick to a clumping clay litter with artificial perfumes to achieve this. This is also targeted at owners who are trying to watch how much they spend on cat litter, as it is typically pretty reasonably priced.
What Makes This Cat Litter Unique
This cat litter is unique because it tries to address 4 different key components of what makes a cat litter great: fighting off ammonia, urine, and feces odors while also providing excellent clumping. This is a very lofty goal and they appear to approach it in a very straightforward manner by going with a simple clay compound.
Clumping Ability –
The clumping of this litter is, for the most part, good. It used to be much better but for some reason, the performance has declined slightly in recent memory. The clumps that are formed are large and heavy which by itself is only a minor complaint (wasted product). The major issue is very particular but essentially when the clumps are exposed to nearby urine they turn into “mud balls” that can smear everywhere.
Keep in mind that if the clumps are left alone and not exposed to urine that they should be fine, but it is still concerning that the presence of something that is obviously in the box as well would make such a huge difference. Other than that they stay hard for multiple days and are easy to identify.
Scent –
There is a rather strong chemical smell that comes from this product that might be a bit too intense for some cats or owners. It likely comes from one of the various ingredients that are used, but unfortunately, we wish they would have toned it back a bit. Beyond the strong perfume scent, this litter does a great job of locking in odor for several days at a time.
Both feces and urine are kept in check and you can tell the “4 in 1” feature is doing its job. However, the litter must encompass any waste or the smell will release to the air. Some other products are better about simply being in the vicinity of the waste and it masking the odor but this needs to wrap around it.
Messiness –
This is a rather dusty litter. This is an issue with many clay-based products on the market but we’d say this one is at the higher end of the spectrum. Thankfully the pellets are heavy enough to not be easily tracked out (except right next to the box) but there will be some tracking of the dust. Cleanup is a breeze as long as the clumps don’t turn into the gooey balls discussed above. If that happens then be prepared for a lot of smearing and sticks to cat paws and fur.
Value –
This product is generally sold online in the budget to the mid-price area. This is an acceptable asking price range and helps to make it easier for us to overlook some of the flaws.
Overall Rating –
The Tidy Cats 4 in 1 Strength Cat Litter Review earns 3 out of 5 cats. A decent solution with no glaring issues, but isn’t going to knock any features out of the park as well. We like the 4 in 1 strength approach and think with a few small tweaks it could be a great litter rather than simply a good litter. We would like to see them tone back the strong perfume smell and optimize the clumping ability a bit more.
