Tidy Cats Lightweight 24/7 Performance Cat Litter Review

Last Updated by Brandon F. on June 8, 2020

Advertised Product Description

This is our Tidy Cats Lightweight 24/7 Performance Cat Litter Review.  Tidy Cats Lightweight 24/7 Performance cat litter promises nonstop odor control, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.  This is accomplished through lightweight litter that weighs half of what conventional clay litters weigh.  The clay used forms light, tight clumps that are easy to identify and scoop and is also very absorbent so it will soak up all those moistures before they can become odor-causing.  This product is available in 8.5-pound jugs and 18-pound boxes.

Who This Cat Litter is Intended For

This cat litter is intended for people who are sick and tired of having to lug around those heavy bags of litter and full litter boxes.  However, they still want to go with a clay formula that retains conventional attributes such as clumping ability and odor absorption.

Also, they may have more than one cat sharing a litter box so they still want the quick performance that the 24/7 line by Tidy Cats embosses.  They and their cats don’t mind an artificial scent being present to help with odor-fighting, either.  Finally, they are willing to pay a premium price for something that fulfills all of these needs.

What Makes This Cat Litter Unique

This product is unique because it still advertises itself as being able to knock out multi-cat litter box odors quickly but can do so with a clay formula that is half the weight of other products.  Even more impressive is that this clay still can clump and hold moisture like we have come to expect.  This is a unique combination that makes it stand out from the crowd.

Clumping Ability – 2.5 star

The clumping of this product is average to good.  For the weight of it compared to other clay litters it holds its own but the problem with the lighter litters is that the clumps just aren’t as hard.  Thankfully they do harden pretty quickly, though.  The other issue is that the clumps can easily sink towards the bottom of the box since the non-clumped litter is so small and light.

This opens up the possibility that your cat might accidentally step on it and break the clump.  In regards to moisture absorbency, it does a decent job but can get overwhelmed if exposed to high-traffic boxes.  And since this is targeted at multi-cat households there is a good likelihood that it might see some high traffic.

Scent – 2.5 star

There is a detergent-like smell that is emitted from this litter.  While not super strong, it does have a certain pungency to it that might bother some cats and owners.  It does a decent job of controlling cat odor, especially feces and especially considering that the clumps are not well-encompassed in many instances.  Urine is kept in check unless there is a high quantity of it in which case it will just sit there and start to smell of ammonia.

Messiness – 2 star

Similar to other lightweight lines offering by Tidy Cats, this product is extremely dusty.  This is the price you pay to enjoy the easier-to-handle material.  The dust is also smaller and easily kicked up when your cat walks on it and especially when you are inserting or removing it from the box.

It also likes to stick to your cat’s fur and paws and be tracked around the house.  Clump removal isn’t an issue as long as you can get to them before they fall apart and urine is similar except that you need to make sure to keep an extra close eye if you have multiple cats using a single box.  If you let the urine get out of control it can become a huge headache to clean up.

Value – 2 star

Online prices for this product vary but are typically in the mid to premium-priced area.  This is much higher than we like to see for a clay cat litter.

Overall Rating – 2.5 star

The Tidy Cats Lightweight 24/7 Performance Cat Litter Review earns 2.5 out of 5 cats.  An average to slightly below average choice.  The lightweight aspect hurts it here because the clumps just don’t get very hard and this also affects how well it can absorb odors, particularly from urine.  The fact that it is quite messy and especially the high price add up to make us not super excited about this one.
