UltraPet Better Way Cedar Cat Litter Review

Advertised Product Description

This is our UltraPet Better Way Cedar Cat Litter Review.  UltraPet Better Way Cedar cat litter is an interesting mix of natural Wyoming bentonite as well as real cedar shavings, which is advertised as giving it great clumping capabilities while also having a refreshing natural scent that also assists with odor control.  Also, it includes a natural cat attractant made from tree resin.  The granules are formed to be soft on paws and good for kitty training.  This product is available in 14-pound bags.

Who This Cat Litter is Intended For

This cat litter is intended for typically single-cat houses that want to stick with clay litters but would like to a bit of a twist on them in addition to kittens or cats just learning how to use a litter box.  Specifically, they or their cats are turned off by the sometimes harsh smell of clay and would prefer something more natural like wood.

However, in doing this they still want it to retain conventional clumping abilities and the absorbing feature found in clay litters.  Finally, this product is designed for those who are willing to pay a premium price for a cat litter if it meets their needs.

What Makes This Cat Litter Unique

This cat litter is unique because it has a cool approach of combining clay and wood.  This is something that we have rarely seen done in other products and we like the thought process behind it.  We also like how they included tree resin which they feel increases the level of attraction that cats have to this product.

Clumping Ability – 1.5 star

The clumping of this product overall isn’t great.  As we have seen in other UltraPet products, the bentonite forms relatively soft clumps which can be prone to falling apart.  Also, this litter is mixed with wood chippings and this results in clumps oftentimes falling into smaller pieces and making somewhat of a mess.

It also can have issues with urine, where it will form dozens of small gooey wood balls that can be easily smashed and a headache to try to clean up.  We feel that combining the clay and wood is a novel approach but needs a bit more tweaking to get it right.

Scent – 2 star

There is a refreshing wood scent to this litter.  Most UltraPet litters have little or no smell (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) so it is refreshing to have one that tries something a little bit different.  Also, the wood chippings do appear to assist in controlling cat odors from cat waste solids and urine.  It isn’t so much absorbing it but rather masking it.  That being said, overall the odor control is still marginal at best and consistent maintenance is recommended or things could get stinky pretty quickly.

Messiness – 2 star

The clumps of both solids and urine fall apart easily, so trying to clean up a litter box containing this product can be quite a headache.  The gooey clumps can stick to the walls of the box relatively easy and even onto your cat’s fur and paws and be tracked outside of the box.  This makes it a very difficult introduction litter to kittens, which is one of the targets that this product mentions. The dust levels for this are lower than comparable litters, however, which is nice.

Value – 1 star

Online prices for this product usually are well into the premium-price range.  This is quite high for a cat litter product, despite it being an all-natural recipe.

Overall Rating – 1.5 star

The UltraPet Better Way Cedar Cat Litter Review earns 1.5 cats out of 5.  We have seen the wood-based litters struggle and this one is no exception.  While it is inherently more eco-friendly, the extremely high price and poor performance (in clumping, odor neutralization, and cleanup) you pay for it just aren’t worth it in our opinion.  We do think it is a neat idea combining two different materials and hope that with a bit of modification to the formula they can make an awesome product.
