UltraPet Better Way Fresh Cat Litter Review

Advertised Product Description

This is our UltraPet Better Way Fresh Cat Litter Review.  UltraPet Better Way Fresh cat litter is made of natural Wyoming bentonite which is advertised as being good for clumping while being soft enough to be comfortable for cat’s paws.  The fresh scent comes from an injection of chamomile aroma directly into the litter.  Also, this product contains sanel which is a natural cat attractant made from tree resin.  This product is low maintenance and great for training kittens.  It is available in 14-pound bags.

Who This Cat Litter is Intended For

This cat litter is designed for typically single-cat and some multi-cat households who are wanting to try traditional clay litter with clumping abilities but are open to some special twists.  Specifically, they and their cats are ok with aromas such as chamomile that are designed to help mask the odor.  Also, the softer than normal granules are a good choice for kittens or cats with sensitive paws.  Finally, those interested in this product will need to be willing to pay a bit extra but still want their product to fall within a reasonable budget.

What Makes This Cat Litter Unique

This cat litter is unique because it takes a very conventional approach of using clay and adds a couple of unique twists that make it stand out and that UltraPet feels adds to the performance.  This comes with the inclusion of chamomile and sanel into the litter recipe.  While these are relatively subtle, they add enough depth to this product to make it stick out from the crowd.

Clumping Ability – 2.5 star

The bentonite results in rather soft clumps that never really harden to a level where you can easily handle them without the worry of them falling apart.  This is also true for urine, which creates small balls rather than simply being soaked into the product like many other offerings.  The clumps form relatively quickly, however.  The big pro is that the litter itself is quite soft and gentle on cat paws, but we guess that comes at the expense of less than stellar clumping ability.

Scent – 2 star

The flower scent contained in this product is quite nice and not at all overpowering.  This is refreshing (no pun intended) when compared to a lot of the other “spring scent” type products on the market which smell extremely artificial and can even leave you and your cat with a burning sensation.

Unfortunately, the nice scent doesn’t translate well into helping to directly combat cat odors.  After a relatively short period, the pungent smell of ammonia can be smelled and any time one of the soft clumps is broken apart it releases these powerful odors back into the air.  Once in the air, the litter also seems to struggle with pulling it back in very quickly.

Messiness – 2 star

Overall the dust levels are somewhat poor. Despite being supposedly made of the same material as several other UltraPet offerings, this litter appears to be even dustier.  Perhaps it has something to do with the scent that was added?  The soft granules are also on the lighter side and can be easily tracked out of the box.  And cleanup can be a huge headache since the clumps you are trying to remove tend to fall apart or simply stick to the walls of the box or the scooper itself because they never fully harden.

Value – 3.5 star

Online prices for this product generally fall in the mid-price range.  This is about the middle of the road for clay cat litters but the unique scent and extra gentle granules give it a slight bump up in the rating.

Overall Rating – 2.5 star

The UltraPet Better Way Fresh Cat Litter Review earns 2.5 out of 5 cats.  The bentonite is just too soft here and the spring scent, while surprisingly refreshing, just doesn’t do a good enough job of stopping odor.  Add the fact that the clumps are quite weak and you have some major issues.  At least the price is more in line with the type of results.
