Advertised Product Description
This is our UltraPet Ultra Lite Cat Litter Review. UltraPet Ultra Lite cat litter is a dual-action, allergy-free, scoopable litter that is advertised as effectively eliminating the odors that come from both feces and urine. It contains bentonite clay which is great for clumping as well as silica crystals which specialize in moisture absorption. This unique concoction is also 60% lighter than conventional clay clumping litters and is also soft on the cat’s paws. Also, there is a fresh fragrance that is embedded in every bag. This product is available in 5 and 10-pound containers.
Who This Cat Litter is Intended For
This cat litter is intended for owners who have struggled to keep the odors of their multi-cat litter box in check using conventional clay products and want to try something different. More specifically, they are interested in combining the clumping ability of clay with the odor ability of silica gel.
This product is also good for cats who might have sensitive paws. Also, it is designed for cats and owners who don’t mind the smell and fumes from an artificial perfume. Finally, it is pretty expensive so it is targeted at those who are willing to spend extra for a product that works.
What Makes This Cat Litter Unique
This cat litter is unique in that it combines two materials that are very different on paper: clay and silica gel beads. The hope here is to extract the best of both materials without introducing any new issues. This is a very refreshing approach and we wish more other companies would try things like this.
Clumping Ability –
The combination of the bentonite (which is notorious for having softer clumps) with the silica gel (which is pretty poor at clumping in general) results in a less than a great clump. The clumps are extremely soft and can fall apart into smaller pieces quite easily. This is likely because the silica gel and the clay simply don’t bond well with each other.
Also, exposure to significant amounts of liquid via urine can break down the litter into a dusty powder. If you test this on a busier litter box with multiple cats it can cause some serious powder dust issues.
Scent –
The fresh scent that this product has is pretty tame and most cats and owners won’t mind it, even if they happen to have sensitive smells or allergies. The odor-controlling ability is bumped up a notch when compared to conventional 100% clay litters. The inclusion of the silica helps to lock in the odor for several days. The minor issue is whenever some of the previous waste is moved around and falls apart the strong waste smell can come back into the air, especially considering that most of the waste will sit towards the top of the box.
Messiness –
The dust levels are less than average, likely due to not being 100% clay. However, due to the lightweight aspect of this product, it tracks extremely easily and can get kicked out of the box quite often. Also, it tends to stick to the fur of longer-haired cats. Removing the clumps can be quite annoying as well as they will oftentimes fall apart and removing the clumps of urine is impossible seeing how all that is left is some messy dust remnants.
Value –
Online prices for this product generally fall in the premium-priced tier. This is a hybrid recipe in that it contains cheaper clay and much more expensive silica gel so it is no surprise to us that UltraPet expects to fetch a premium for this product.
Overall Rating –
The UltraPet Ultra Lite Cat Litter Review earns 2.5 out of 5 cats. The combination of unique ingredients plus the lightweight formula makes for a poorly-clumping and messy concoction. However, it does a reasonably good job of stopping odors, thanks to the silica gel. We are pretty neutral on this product overall. If they could improve the clumps and the ability to retain moisture we would be a lot more excited about it.
