Advertised Product Description

This is our Precious Cat R&R Respiratory Relief Silica Gel Cat Litter Review.  Precious Cat R&R Respiratory Relief Silica Gel cat litter is designed to help control respiratory disease in cats that suffer from it.  It is low in dust and hypo-allergenic while containing no plant proteins, perfumes, or deodorants.   It is advertised as being 99.9% dust-free, biodegradable, excellent at trapping odors, and is non-toxic.  This product is available in 7.5-pound bags.

Who This Cat Litter is Intended For

As the name suggests, this product is primarily intended for cats who have suffered from respiratory issues in the past.  This is accomplished by using what Precious Cat believes is low-dust and hypoallergenic ingredients.  Specifically, this product is good for cats and owners who may have issues being around conventional clay cat litters or just want to try a different type of material.  That being said, there is a Precious Cat Litter option for those that like clay cat litters.

Also, using silica gel takes away the clumping ability of this litter so this product is also targeted at those owners who don’t want to have to deal with removing clumps.  Finally, the target audience for this litter will be willing to spend a premium to get a product that works for them and their cat.

What Makes This Cat Litter Unique

This cat litter is unique because it targets a very particular demographic: cats with respiratory issues.  A vast majority of other litters are aimed towards more broad or generic categories such as kittens, long-haired cats, multiple cats, etc.  The fact that the manufacturer spent the time and resources to make a product for such a specific niche shows us that they have put a lot of effort into it and believe that they have a well-functioning product on their hands.

Clumping Ability – N/A

This product is not intended for clumping.  You are expected to simply change out the entire box as necessary (generally every week or two depending on how busy the litter box is).  There is a bit of difficulty associated with capturing moisture, and urine can potentially bed up in the bottom if not taken care of promptly.

Scent – 3 star

There is very little smell that comes from the gel itself.  This is likely attributed to the fact that the gel has an only marginal natural odor and since no harsh chemicals or perfumes are added then it results in an essentially scent-free product.  The product does a decent job at odor control, but its ability is heavily dictated on how long it has been since it has been swapped out.

Towards the end of its life, some cat waste smells can start to come out, especially from the urine that isn’t able to be absorbed.  However, absorbency levels are acceptable so you can even get away using this for two or three cats who are sharing a litter box as long as you are timely with replacing the litter.

Messiness – 3.5 star

There is essentially no dust associated with this product, which is important to note since having low dust levels is so heavily advertised.  Also, since you aren’t expected to maintain the litter but rather dump it out when it is finished, the only contact you’ll have with it is removal and replacement.  That being said, if the urine can get to the base of the box you are left with a sticky, pasty mess that can leave you scraping it off.  It can also be tracked by your cats in this phase so it is important to be timely about replacing it.

Value – 1 star

This litter can be hard to come by online and can be quite expensive because of it.  Typically it will be well into the premium-priced tier.  We are used to silica gel and crystal cat litters being more pricey but this one is near the top in terms of asking price.

Overall Rating – 2.5 star

The Precious Cat R&R Respiratory Relief Silica Gel Cat Litter Review earns 2.5 out of 5 cats.  This is a specialty litter intended for cats with medical issues, and as such you are primarily paying for that aspect and not particularly the odor neutralizing or cleanup specifics.  For someone who doesn’t have a cat that has these specific respiratory problems, we don’t recommend spending this kind of money on what is honestly an average at best offering, especially when it is lacking features such as clumping and long-term odor control.
